October 2, 2012 - Volunteers from Texas and Tennessee have spent the last two weekends in Virginia to assist in get-out-the-vote efforts in the critical battleground state.

The effort, part of the independent project Volunteers for Virginia, connected the out-of-state volunteers with their like-minded hosts in Roanoke and Richmond to knock on more than 5,600 doors over two weekends in September.

One volunteer from Texas, Collin County Judge Keith Self, said the door-to-door effort is key.

"Our team of six Texans approached undecided voters identified by the Virginia organizers in the Richmond area. While some had made up their minds, many are still very interested in discussing the issues before they commit to either candidate," Self said. "Texans will make a difference in the Virginia presidential election if we continue to make the effort to go face-to-face with undecided and uncommitted voters. Door-to-door canvassing works."

Volunteers who couldn’t make the 2,000+mile round-trip journey have sent more than 13,500 handwritten postcards to voters in Virginia, encouraging them to vote.

"People across the country see that our economy is in shambles. They see how unsustainable our current fiscal path is," said Lorie Medina, founder of the Frisco Tea Party in Texas and chief strategist for Texas Faith & Freedom Coalition. "More than ever in my lifetime, citizens are reaching across state lines to work in swing states because they see that the futures of their families are at stake."

"When we tell Virginians we talk to on their doorsteps that we've driven more than 900 miles round trip to ask them personally to vote for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, they're clearly impressed by the personal sacrifices we've made to bring that message to them," said Michael Patrick Leahy who has made the trip to Virginia several times from his home in the Nashville, Tennessee area.

The local grassroots group We rVirginia, an organization formed to mobilize the grassroots community in Virginia for the sole purpose of impacting the 2012 general election, is hosting the traveling volunteers.

Cumberland Tea Party Aretie Patterson said the trip to Roanoke was definitely worth it.

"If I needed proof that our trips to Roanoke were making a difference, Dr. [Kim] Peaslee heard it Sunday at the Roanoke IHOP," Patterson said. "A customer was talking to a man at another table. He said his nephew’s name was on a list of undecided voters and that 'these people came 900 miles to talk to my nephew about Romney. Now you tell me, that they don't want him out of office!'"

Volunteers will be focusing on Fairfax County during the weekend of Oct. 5 - 7.

Volunteers Reach Swing-State Voters with Personal Notes

September 27, 2012 - Activists in the "safe" red states of Texas and Tennessee, wanting to do their part this election, are using a new approach to reach voters in swing states like Virginia.

Working with the independent project Volunteers for Virginia, activists are writing personal notes to Virginians, letting them know just how crucial their votes are this year.

More than 13,500 handwritten postcards have been sent to Virginia voters, with more being sent each day. Lorie Medina, founder of the Frisco Tea Party in Texas, hopes that the letter-writing campaign will reach voters in a way that campaign mailers and TV and radio ads don't.

"Speaking with the people of Virginia, many of them are inundated with 5 and 6 phone calls about their vote each night. More often than not, they choose not to answer," said Medina, who is also chief strategist for Texas Faith & Freedom Coalition. "Our postcard effort short-circuits the never-ending noise of traditional political advertisements. By contrast, we are sending personal messages from one concerned citizen to another expressing the importance for the future of our country."

September 20, 2012 - Momentum is rapidly building as word spreads of patriotic Texans and Tennesseans traveling to Virginia as part of the independent get-out-the-vote project, Volunteers for Virginia.

The out-of-state volunteers connected with their like-minded Virginia hosts in Roanoke and Northern Virginia and together knocked on 1900 doors.

"For me, it was an energizing experience," wrote Tennessee's Cumberland Tea Party member Aretie Patterson about her Virginia trip last weekend. "I was no longer sitting at a computer, worrying about polls, reading depressing news, complaining, feeling frustrated and helpless. Instead, I was walking, talking, getting out the vote. I was actively working to change the course of things. We were taking charge!"

Those volunteers unable to make the 2,400 mile round trip journey began an innovative letter-writing campaign, resulting in a staggering 6,200 hand-written notes mailed so far to Virginia voters.

"Our hard-won Primary victories are behind us now, so we're ready and able to help critical swing states like Virginia," Lorie Medina, founder of the Frisco, Texas Tea Party and currently Chief Strategist for Texas Faith & Freedom Coalition said. "Texans across the state are volunteering their time and energy to get-out-the-vote in Virginia by walking neighborhoods, making phone calls, and writing personal notes urging voters to cast their vote this November."

The local grassroots group We rVirginia is hosting the traveling volunteers, providing them with food and lodging during their stay. "We have a tremendous number of people to talk with between now and Election Day - and with the help of our Texas and Tennessee partners, we will be able to visit them all!" said Nancy Smith, spokesperson for We rVirgina.

The weekend of the 22nd will see the volunteers focus on Richmond, Blacksburg, and Roanoke.

September 15, 2012 - Volunteers from Texas and Tennessee arrive in Virginia today to kick off a weekend-long get-out-the-vote event as a part of the independent project, Volunteers for Virginia.

The volunteers are split into two groups, with Tennesseans focusing on Roanoke while the Texans work in Northern Virginia.

Michael Patrick Leahy, co-organizer of Volunteers for Virginia and a tea party activist from Tennessee said, "For many red state conservative activists, their state's Electoral College outcome is inevitable and predictable. However, for a few important states, like Virginia, the end of the story has not been written. While this project is lead by Tennesseans and Texans, volunteers from any red state in the country are welcome to help out in Virginia."

Many volunteers hail from more than 1200 miles away, refreshed and energized after the astonishing come-from- behind victory of US Senate nominee Ted Cruz.

"This is the most important election of my lifetime. For me, it’s not enough to see my own state uphold the principles of life, limited government and fiscal responsibility in November," said Nashvillian Donna Hartman. "As a mom and grand-mom, I have to do everything I can to help make sure my children and grandchildren have the same opportunities as I did."

August 20, 2012 - Local grassroots leaders from the red states of Texas and Tennessee today announced the launch of Volunteers for Virginia, an independent get-out-the-vote project that will support Virginians in defeating Obama in November.

The project’s first event will take place this weekend at the NASCAR race held at the Bristol Motor Speedway where volunteers from Virginia, Texas, and Tennessee will be registering Virginia residents to vote. Many of the expected crowd of 165,000 who will be attending the Food City 250 Nationwide series NASCAR race on Friday, August 24th and the Irwin Tools 500 Sprint series NASCAR race on Saturday, August 25th are Virginia residents.

Volunteers for Virginia will be working side by side with We rVirginia an organization which is committed to coordinating the efforts of  local grassroots leaders that are focused on getting out the vote on November 6th.  We rVirginia will provide all the resources necessary to Volunteers for Virginia, including all lodging and food.

Lorie Medina, founder of the Frisco, Texas Tea Party and currently Chief Strategist for Texas Faith & Freedom Coalition said, "After Texas grassroots conservatives helped Ted Cruz become the Republican nominee for US Senate in an incredibly hard-fought Primary, we're ready to help other states.  Activists around the state are ready to give their time and energy to support Virginia.  And, we have several newly-elected Texas State Representatives that have won their Primary Elections.  Now, they don’t have a Democrat challenger to contend with and want to lead activists from their District to Virginia to walk door-to-door."

Volunteers for Virginia will provide conservative activists from Texas and Tennessee the opportunity to make phone calls and write personalized postcards from their homes or travel to Virginia and participate in voter registration drives or walking door-to-door.

We rVirginia, LLC is an independent group of Virginians active in local tea party groups and other various conservative organizations who have come together to execute a statewide get-out-the-vote effort. It is financially supported through local Virginia funding.

Texas Faith & Freedom Coalition, a newly formed faith based state affiliate of the National Faith and Freedom Coalition founded by Ralph Reed in 2009, is generously providing travel scholarships for Texas activists going in person to Virginia.
